Social Star Awards @ Marina Bay Sands (Singapore)

There was a big crowd gathering at the Mastercard Theatre lobby at Marina Bay Sands, sipping a complementary glass of champaign.  There was a slight delay in the proceedings and we were let in at around 9 pm.

Jeremy Piven and Jessica Alba were the host of the evenings.  They were affable as individuals, but both took a while to gel as hosts, and at times being let down by the multi-media screen.  Nevertheless, it was good to see Jessica Alba live in person.

Aerosmith started the show with 3 songs, and beatboxer Hikakin provided the intro to the band's hit song "Walk This Way".  At one point, Steven Tyler got the 2 hosts to join in the act.

We experienced the first live telecast of the original Harlem Shake...

..and the great pop song of 2012, Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.

With Sky Blu in the house...

George Takei of Star Trek fame spoke, but was let down by the constant disappearance of the video images.   He did not bring Scotty to beam him up...

CeeLo Green did a few songs.  I particular liked the song Crazy.  Looking forward to his performance segment the next evening..

Psy closed the show with Gentleman and Gangnam Style.  He joked that his impersonator was having free food and drinks at Cannes, and had 3 bodyguards.  He only travelled with one.

As most winners did not make it to Singapore, and as there were no trophies for the winners, the evening felt a bit empty without some acceptance speeches.  Nonetheless, the evening was helped by the good performances of the artists.  For example Wrecking Crew's black light type of dancing went very well with the audience.

I just wonder how many of this year's nominees would appear in next year's lists, given the fact that social media create stars at such a fast rate, meaning that the current favourites may fade very quickly too.
