Am I: Shaun Parker's philosophy of "Self" a great start to Adelaide Festival 2014

While the Adelaide Festival would not officially open on the 28th Feb, some productions had already started its run.

At the Dunstan Theatre of the Adelaide Festival Centre, Shaun Parker & Company's Am I explored "what it means to identify ourselves as 'I'".  Using texts from various literature, choreographer Shaun Parker shared a narrator with 6 dancers.

The dancers were a disciplined lot and in unity.  I liked the way they did the various formations, and the stylised movements that resembled lotus flowers.   The use of the metallic sticks, which was supposed to represent "man's acquisition of knowledge",  was one of the highlights of the evening.  The choreography looked simple, but coupled with the lighting design, it created a beautiful effect.  Nick Wales' world music composition provided an atmosphere for this exploration, together with the strong production team.

While I ususally have reservations about themes on life and self-discovery, Am I  did it with the right dosage. At times thought-provoking, at times profound and at times humorous, it did get the audience's attention for its 80 minute duration. .

A mid-scale production at the Duncan Theatre, but a great curtain raiser for the Adelaide Festival 2014.
