Day I Met the Prince

The Theatre Practice restaged Day I Met the Prince (我要上天的那一晚) as part of the Kuo Pao Kun's Festival 2012.  The play was written in the late 80s and most of us did not have the opportunity to see it.  It was therefore with great anticipation that I attended this performance staged at the School of The Arts Studio Theatre.

The play was inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupery's Le Petit Prince, which talked about a young man's journey through the universe, meeting various people and running away from his beloved Rose.

In this theatrical production aiming at youth and children, the relationship part was pared down.  The cast of 3 played various roles and at times, interacted with the audience.  The storyline was simple, and it thus relied upon the 3 actors (Hung Chit Wah, Lv Lin Xuan, Catherine Wong) to hold the production. The three of them did a competent job, though I hoped they could engage and improvise better with the audience, especially towards children's response to certain situations.

In this version, lyricist Xiao Han penned a few songs, in addition to the original songs by Mark Chan and Kuo Pao Kun.

Overall, the audience, in particular the children, enjoyed the performance.   This is a good youth theatre production and deserved to be staged at regular intervals.
