Siong Leng Multisensory Nanyin Banquet

Siong Leng Musical Association held its 3rd edition of the multisensory nanyin banquet on 22 & 23 Sep at the Changi Beach Club.  Nanyin music, "Music of the South", is one of the oldest Chinese music form.  The evening's event would combine nanyin event performance with cuisine.

The evening started with a parade 踩街, which was the gathering of nanyin players.  The performers started from the far end of the Club by the sea and marched towards the reception area.  Maybe the audience could be nearer the performers?

The 24 seasons drum started the proceedings in the reception room.

24 Season drum gained popularity in Malaysia and it had been promoted well in Singapore for the past decade.

The ceremony to commemorate Lang Jun began.

Lang Jun was the founding father of nanyin music.  The ritual is conducted on the 12th day of the 2nd month of Spring and the 12th day of the 8th lunar month.

The ceremony was informative to first timers, but I guess the guests were more keen for the dinner to commence.

It was a Hokkien style dinner.

Stone Lion City Nanyin Ensemble from Fujian province also performed at the dinner.

It was a differet experience having a dinner and appreciating nanyin music at the same time.  The whole event was slightly long but I believe most guests had an enjoyable time.
