Review: Wi!d Rice's Hansel & Gretel

Welcome to the Sebastian Tan and Siti Khalijah show!  The 2 actors stole the show in Wild Rice's latest pantomine Hansel and Gretel.

Hansel and Gretel, played by Dwayne Tan and Denise Tan respectively, lived in Queenstown with their widowed father (Dwayne Lau).  In came prospective stepmother (Vernetta Lopez), who was more keen on shopping and be a singing star, and of course got rid of them in the Mandai jungle.

Alfian Sa'at's script included references to what happened in Singapore over the past year, though some of them may sound dated.   The most memorable scene would have to be Sebastian's portrayal of an army sergeant who was lost with his platoon in the jungle.  He was aptly supported by the First Stage! Kids.

Sebastian was equally impressive as the Wicked Witch, who was trying to start her own cook show.  Siti Khalijah played her assistant Nicki Minah, with hilarious effect.  She also played the role of maid in H&G's family.  (But is that role over-done, over-exposed?)

The other actors put up a competent performances.     It was fun to see Verneta Lopez playing a character which reminded us of a pastor's wife.

The set design was creative and food was stuck onto the walls.  Some scenes seemed draggy but overall, Pam Oei did a good job of piecing everything together.  It is still an enjoyable pantomine.
