Best Of by The Necessary Stage

One of the 2 local theatre productions for the M1 Fringe Festival 2013, Best Of was a monologue about the challenges faced by female Malay Muslim in Singapore.
The staging was simple: a chair in the middle of the stage where the actress gave an account of what happened during a day where she had to visit her cousin in jail and also to attede her divorce hearing .

The protagonist, played by Siti Khalijah Zainal, could not get a divorce due to the rules of the Syariah Court.  This play, written by Haresh Sharma and directed by Alvin Tan, also touched on the challenges and mindsets of Malays in contemporary Singapore society.  The writing was tight, I however felt that too many issues were touched on and not many were dealt in depth.

Siti Kahlijah gave a good performance and held the attention of the audience with her story telling.  I hope that she would eventually took on other roles where she could extend her acting range.  But in this production, she showed that she is the "best of" her generation of actors.
