La Cage Aux Folles

Caught the second last performance of La Cage aux Folles by Wild Rice.  It was a play about George who owned the nightclub La Cage and his partner Albin who was the star of the cabaret. The drama starts when George's son John revealed the news that he was getting married to the daughter of a conservative politician.

The first half started well with Ivan Heng as Albin holding the fort.  He was aptly supported by Tony Eusoff (George) and Hossan Leong (Jacob the butler). The directing was tight and the pace was right.  Tony Eusoff sang well in the numbers.

The second half, unfortunately, was a bit loose.  It was a pity as the other family was introduced and we expected fireworks betwen the characters.  The portrayal of the girl's family was rather 2-dimensional and it sort of dilted the impact.  Having the father looked like a VVIP may draw laughs initially but the novelty die off after a while.  It's a pity that Karen Tan and Tan Kheng Hua did not have much chance to shine this time.

Having said that, this is an enjoyable production and the production values are of high standards.  A very good effort by Wild Rice.
